Dr. Martin Ambrose Mutua Marks Major Academic Milestone with PhD Graduation

Dr. Martin Ambrose Mutua has been conferred with a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Project Management by Kenyatta University, marking the end of a decade-long academic journey and the unveiling of research that offers practical recommendations for revitalising Kenya's coffee sector.

Dr. Mutua was among just 76 PhD graduates in a graduating class of approximately 2,300 students, a milestone celebrated by family, friends, colleagues, and fellow scholars during the university's graduation ceremony.

Addressing guests during the graduation celebration, Dr. Mutua reflected on his academic journey, explaining that his years of study were driven by a desire to develop practical solutions to real-world challenges. Drawing from his experience in the agricultural sector, he encouraged professionals to use education as a tool for creating meaningful impact in society.

"Project management is not limited to organizations. It applies to every aspect of life from business and careers to family and community development. Every successful journey begins with proper planning and execution," he said.

Dr. Mutua's doctoral research, titled "Certification Practices and Project Implementation in the Coffee Sector in Kiambu County, Kenya," found that structured certification systems can significantly improve the performance of Kenya's coffee industry. The study identified quality management, sustainability compliance, farmer training, and digital market platforms as the key drivers of successful project implementation and increased farmer earnings.

The research projects that if these reforms are fully implemented, Kenya's annual coffee export earnings could increase from KSh 38.4 billion to KSh 116 billion by 2030, while certified green coffee production could rise to 150,000 metric tonnes. It also estimates the creation of more than three million jobs, particularly for young people, through expanded opportunities in farming, processing, logistics, certification, and cooperative management.

The study further recommends six key policy interventions: institutionalising quality management in certification programmes, making structured farmer training mandatory, strengthening sustainability compliance, investing in digital coffee market platforms, improving cooperative governance, and developing an African-led certification framework tailored to local realities. According to the findings, these reforms would boost export earnings, reduce youth unemployment, strengthen rural livelihoods, and generate additional government revenue.

His wife paid an emotional tribute to his achievement, praising his determination and ability to balance family responsibilities with the demands of pursuing a doctorate. She said that despite his busy academic schedule, he remained a devoted father who never stopped taking their children to school every day, inspiring them through his commitment to excellence.

"Despite pursuing his PhD, he never stopped taking our children to school every day. He has shown them that excellence is possible even while juggling family, work, and education. Today, they have their father as a role model," she said.

She also commended his leadership as the founding president of Gracie Solutions and his service as a Board of Management (BOM) chair, saying his expertise has helped improve schools and inspired many young people to pursue academic excellence.

Dr. Mutua's brother described the doctorate as the culmination of a ten-year journey marked by resilience, determination, and countless sacrifices. He recalled how Dr. Mutua inspired him from a young age to value education and remained a mentor throughout his academic journey.

"This doctorate is a testimony of persistence. We watched him overcome countless challenges over ten years, and today he stands as an inspiration to our family, our community, and everyone pursuing higher education," he said.

Family members, led by Dr. Mutua's mother, together with friends, neighbours, colleagues, and members of the Gracie fraternity, praised him for his outstanding academic achievement, describing him as a humble, resilient, and visionary leader. They lauded his unwavering commitment to education, family, mentorship, and community service, noting that his journey is a source of inspiration to many. They congratulated him on attaining the prestigious doctoral degree and expressed confidence that his research and leadership will continue to make a lasting impact on Kenya's development and inspire future generations.
