Babu Owino Condemns Gikomba Demolitions, Demands Justice for Traders

Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has sharply criticized the demolition of parts of Gikomba Market, describing the move as illegal and an infringement on the rights of traders.

After visiting those affected, the legislator stood in solidarity with hundreds of small business owners whose sources of income were severely disrupted following the destruction of their stalls.

He praised the traders as dedicated Kenyans who start their days early and work tirelessly to support their families and drive the local economy, emphasizing that they deserve protection, not displacement.

Owino pointed out that despite securing court orders intended to safeguard their businesses, the demolitions still went ahead, terming the action a serious breach of the law and an affront to justice and human dignity.

The demolitions, carried out at night, left many traders counting heavy losses as their structures were brought down, throwing their livelihoods into uncertainty.

He faulted the authorities for disregarding court directives that had required the situation to remain unchanged until the matter is heard and determined in court.

According to the MP, failure to respect such orders weakens the rule of law and undermines public confidence in institutions tasked with protecting citizens.

He further called for those responsible to be held accountable and urged relevant agencies to respect legal processes and uphold the rights of ordinary Kenyans.

Reiterating his commitment, Owino vowed to continue standing with the traders in their pursuit of justice, insisting that their fight reflects a broader struggle for fairness and respect.

“Their struggle is our struggle. Their resilience is our inspiration. We will not be silent,” he affirmed.
