ABH 2026 Top 20 Revealed: 12 Countries, $85M Revenue, 40% Women as Nairobi Hosts Semi-Final

The Africa's Business Heroes (ABH) Prize Competition, the flagship philanthropic initiative supported by Alibaba Philanthropy and the Jack Ma Foundation, has announced its Top 20 finalists for the 2026 edition ahead of a high-stakes Semi-Final set for Nairobi, Kenya from August 21-22, where the selected founders will pitch for a spot in the Top 10. 

Selected from a highly competitive pool of over 24,000 applicants across all 54 African nations, the 2026 Top 20 cohort represents 12 countries and 11 core industries, with eight female entrepreneurs making up 40% of the group. The 2026 cohort brings significant commercial strength, having collectively generated approximately US$85 million in revenue in 2025. Their businesses span Agriculture and agritech, healthcare, manufacturing, climate technology, financial services, education, energy and technology.

The selection process advanced through rigorous three-person judging panels evaluating candidates on leadership, innovation, impact, scalability and commercial viability. To complement interviews and written applications, ABH conducted comprehensive on-the-ground visits to every semi-finalist enterprise, supported by detailed due diligence from venture capital firm PlusVC. These physical site visits serve as a cornerstone of the ABH process, validating operational resilience, real market demand, team execution, and community trust - qualities that traditional investment filters frequently overlook in African markets.

The 2026 Semi-Final marks a full-circle moment as the program returns to Nairobi, the host city of ABH's very first Semi-Final. Over the years, Nairobi has cemented its position as one of the continent's most dynamic hubs for technology, capital and entrepreneurship. This year's host event will feature an expanded investor audience, turning the competition into a strategic marketplace for capital, strategic partnerships, and deal-making between African founders and global funders.

The Top 20 will pitch to a distinguished panel of judges. Kome Oruade-Etim, Global Program Manager for Acumen Angels and former West Africa Lead for Acumen Academy, brings extensive experience supporting purpose-driven leaders and early-stage enterprises addressing complex social challenges. Wandia Gichuru, Co-founder and CEO of Vivo Fashion Group, brings the perspective of an entrepreneur who has built and scaled one of East Africa's most recognizable fashion businesses. Thomas Njeru, Co-founder and CEO of Pula Advisors and a 2023 ABH Top Three finalist, returns as a judge having stood on the ABH stage as a finalist himself and understanding the entrepreneurial journey and the qualities required to translate a compelling vision into a scalable enterprise. Jason Pau, Executive Director (International) at the Jack Ma Foundation, who co-founded and has actively led the ABH program for the last 7 years, completes the panel. ABH notes its support extends past the pitch stage.

Following the Semi-Finals, the second edition of ABH's Hangzhou learning and market-access trip will take place in China from September 14-18. Approximately 40 participants from over 10 African countries primarily consisting of 2024 and 2025 Top 10 Heroes, alongside alumni, judges and Alibaba Digital Lion program participants, will travel to China. The immersion program offers African founders direct access to one of the world's leading technology and digital commerce ecosystems, equipping them with practical insights and global networks to scale their enterprises sustainably back home.

The 2026 Top 20 Heroes feature an extraordinary cohort of African entrepreneurs driving high-impact innovation across the continent.
